Processes

  • Daguerreotype: This early photographic process, developed by Louis Daguerre in 1839, involves an image formed on a silvered copper plate. The plate is first exposed to iodine vapor, making it sensitive to light, then exposed to an image, and finally developed using mercury vapor. Daguerreotypes are known for their sharpness and detail but are fragile and unique, with no negatives for reproduction.

  • Cyanotype: Invented by Sir John Herschel in 1842, this process produces a cyan-blue print and is simple and cost-effective. The process involves treating paper or cloth with a solution of ferric ammonium citrate and potassium ferricyanide. After drying, the material is exposed to UV light with a negative or objects placed on top, then washed in water, leaving a blue image.

  • Platinum Print: Platinum prints, or platinotypes, are made by placing a negative in contact with a paper coated in a solution of platinum salts and then exposing it to UV light. The image is developed in a chemical bath. Known for their broad tonal range and stability, platinum prints are highly valued for their subtle gradations of black and white.

  • Gum Bichromate: This process uses gum arabic mixed with dichromate and pigment to coat paper. After drying, it is exposed to light through a negative, hardening the gum arabic in proportion to the amount of light received. Unhardened areas are then washed away, leaving a colored image. Layers can be built up for multi-colored prints.

  • Wet Plate Collodion: Introduced in the 1850s, this technique involves coating a glass or metal plate with collodion and silver nitrate to make it light-sensitive. The plate is exposed in a camera while still wet and then developed quickly. It produces detailed images and was used for both ambrotypes (on glass) and tintypes (on metal).

  • Salt Print: One of the oldest photographic processes, developed by William Henry Fox Talbot in the 1830s. It involves coating paper with a solution of sodium chloride (salt) followed by silver nitrate, creating light-sensitive silver chloride. After exposure under a negative, the image is fixed and washed. Salt prints are characterized by their soft, matte appearance.

  • Carbon Print: Carbon printing is a process that uses gelatin mixed with a pigment (carbon black) and a sensitizer. After drying, the paper is exposed to light under a negative, and then developed in a warm water bath, which removes the unhardened gelatin, leaving a relief image. Carbon prints are known for their archival quality and depth of color.

  • Palladium Print: Similar to platinum printing but uses palladium instead of platinum, offering a slightly different tonal range and being less expensive. Palladium prints share many of the same qualities as platinum prints, including their longevity and the ability to render detailed highlights and shadows.

  • Albumen Print: The albumen print process, popular in the 19th century, uses egg white (albumen) mixed with salt and coated on paper; then, the paper is sensitized with silver nitrate. The result is a detailed print with a slightly glossy surface. Albumen prints were most commonly used for carte de visite and cabinet cards.

  • Van Dyke Brown: Named after the rich brown color reminiscent of Van Dyke's paintings, this process involves coating paper with a solution of ferric ammonium citrate and silver nitrate. After drying, it is exposed to light, producing a brown image. The process is similar to cyanotype but yields brown-toned images and offers a range of expressive tones.

With a quarter-century behind the lens, Paedric has navigated the realms of silver, ventured into the depths of platinum, and now explores the complexities of photogravure. Alongside he has embraced the playful exploration of monoprinting and other experimental techniques, toying with applying images to paper with a blend of intuition, paint and ink.

Different Ages of Vintage by Eric Baloga

About the Artist and Photographer
As far back as I can remember there has always been a spark of something different in me that
saw things in an unusual way. There was always a strong desire, a strong need, to convey my
thoughts and experiences into form. Fascinated with light and colour, my first creations of
expression and creativity used watercolour or oil paints with my own drawings.
Dabbling with various kinds of photography over the years: like Landscape, automotive and
aviation photography; dipping a little more into infrared photography, using full-time converted
cameras; I then splash-dived into the roots of photography. An avid collector of vintage cameras
which date back to the beginning of photography, I experimented with film photography. My
journey progressed further to learn the mid-1800’s process of colodian/wetplate photography,
and alternative printing techniques such as cyanotype and darkroom techniques. I travelled to
Halifax, Nova Scotia during the summer of 2022 to learn from a professional wetplate
photographer. Since then I have been perfecting the craft.
I would like to share with you my thoughts, imagination, and works of art that developed over the
years. Please feel free to share your own thoughts or questions regarding my work by email at [email protected]

Horst Herget is a wet plate photographer based in Toronto. He studies a variety of human
relationships. His latest project, “Interspace,” examines the source of identity on a physiological
level: How we are, who we are. ”Interspace” provides visual renderings of the formation and
mechanisms of our selfhood, reflecting on the biological and psychological evolution of our life
experiences.
Horst is fascinated by the alchemical transformation and mindful execution required of the
1850’s wet plate photographic process. His otherworldly images are created with hand-built sets, ethereal lighting, and a touch of mystery. The distinct subtleties of each wet plate depict the nuances of our individual presence.
As an engaged member of the wet plate community for more than a decade, Horst is frequently
sought for speaking engagements and tintype portrait sessions.
In addition to private lessons
and multi-day workshops, he has shared his experiences as a panellist with the Artists’ Network,
has been an invited instructor during the Contact Photography Festival, and hosts a monthly
photography salon at his studio –the Alternative Process Social – for the local photography community.

Memory: 04-01-2023, No. 1-17A series of 17 images from one dayA process was used where multiple exposures on 35mm film are captured and overlaid in a method similar to how memories blend, blur and interact in the mind. Intentionally, the process involves the artist disconnecting from the act of controlling how images overlay, instead focusing on capturing moments, compositions and juxtapositions (similar to phrases of music) where each image is influenced by and sometimes a reaction to predecessors and anticipated descendants. The end result is similar to an improvised jazz composition where the artist consciously plays all the instruments simultaneously, riffing and reacting with the other players(himself) while his subconscious creates ‘the mix’ in the control room. All images are multiple exposures, on film, in camera. No digital manipulation was involved.Technical notes:

BioAtia Pokorny, a native of Prague, has lived and worked in Toronto since 1982. In her photography practice, she draws on a lifetime of professional engagement with art and architecture. She is a visual storyteller and her common theme is examination of memory, of what is remembered and what is imagined. She likes to experiment with various techniques, such as manipulating her photographs by cutting and folding or by transforming them into two- or three-dimensional collages or installations. Cyanotype printing is her latest exploration. As a member of Gallery 44, she has exhibited solo in the Members’ Gallery and in numerous group shows. This exhibition is her first with APS.The series on view implies a sense of mystery and wonder that can be found in our everyday situations. The historical technique of cyanotype heightens such feelings.

Graduated from George Brown College, Graphic Design
I’m a freelance art director with a passion for photography. It began with the treasured
family pictures my parents brought from Italy when we immigrated to Canada
These snapshots of family and places from the past triggered strong emotions which
no doubt had a great influence on me as a photographer.
While largely self-taught, my role as an art director has afforded me the opportunity to learn
from the many talented photographers I’ve collaborated with over the years. I enjoy working in
both digital and analog formats. While digital photography offers limitless creative possibilities,
there’s something about the tactile process of analog that transports me back to the thrill of
developing my first photo in the high school darkroom.

Nobody (2024) by Shelagh Howard

Shelagh Howard - Artist Statement - Intimate/partnerIntimate/partner: An Exploration of Human Connection and Domestic Abuse
My current project, ‘Intimate/partner’, explores the intricate and complex dynamics
of intimate partner abuse, aiming to shed light on its multifaceted nature and far-
reaching impact.
Through a series of images characterized by motion blur juxtaposed with moments
of clarity, I examine the complex range of emotions, interactions, and experiences
inherent in human intimacy. Within this spectrum lie both the tender and
distressing facets of connection, which in abusive relationships can become
difficult to distinguish from one another. It is my aim to encourage dialogue on the
intricacies of how we navigate physical and emotional closeness within
relationships, and how many of us are pulled into the downward spiral that
encompasses emotional, psychological, sexual, financial and physical abuse within
the confines of relationships that we believed were based in love and consent.
By employing abstraction and manipulating blur, I harness the power of visual
language to broach this sensitive and challenging subject matter. While the
results of physical violence can be visible, the insidious nature of emotional abuse
and coercive control are impossible to see. These artistic choices allow me to
represent the invisible, and serve as poignant vehicles for initiating a nuanced and
constructive dialogue surrounding this critical issue.
In recent years, conversations surrounding intimate partner abuse have gained
momentum, underlining the pressing need for heightened awareness and open
dialogue. Recognized as a global public health pandemic by the World Health
Organization, and acknowledged as an epidemic by both federal and local
governments in Canada and abroad, the urgency to address gender-based
intimate partner violence is more critical than ever. Through my artistic practice, I
endeavour to contribute to this discourse by exposing the often concealed and
insidious aspects of this issue, while simultaneously celebrating the inherent
beauty and significance of healthy intimacy.
SHELAGH HOWARD
https://www.shelaghhoward.art/
Shelagh Howard is an award-winning photographer and visual artist whose work
explores time, memory, and connection with embodiment as both focus and
framework.
With an unflinching lens, she invites viewers to dismantle the slick edifice of artificially
constructed identities, and to instead turn inwards and reflect on the nature of the true,
vulnerable self. Shelagh leverages long exposures to create dichotomous images that
are both vividly dynamic and achingly minimalistic.
Each image asks the viewer to see its subject free of the trappings of clothing or
gender, captured outside of time, and to consider what it means to belong to and in a
body. Negating the backdrop of easy identifiers or assumptions, the work spotlights
the exploration of concepts like selfhood, intimacy, loneliness, vulnerability, isolation,
and connection through the expression of the human form.
Shelagh studied psychology at The University of Toronto, and photography at Ryerson
University, and has since created and exhibited works in Canada, the US and Europe,
building a strong professional reputation. Shelagh’s work was selected for the juried
SNAP - ACT Silent Auction (March 2019 and 2020) and she received an honourable
mention at the 14th Annual Julia Margaret Cameron Awards in Barcelona, Spain in
2020. In 2021, she received the Artist Award from the Cornell Henry Art Gallery in San
Diego.

Mordançage

2023Laboosta, Self PortraitMordançage of an 8x10 silver gelatine print, made from a 35mm negative. Based on a 19th century method, the process known as mordançage has been used to dramatically alter black and white photographs since the 1960s. Mordançage subjects a fully developed photograph to a series of wet chemical reactions, beginning with an acidic copper(II) chloride and hydrogen peroxide bleaching solutionNot For Sale

Laboosta (2023) by Jamie Marcellus

Jamie Marcellus is a Toronto based photographer. With no formal art training, he first picked up a camera in 2019. He utilizes a combination of modern and historic photographic techniques including wet plate collodion, experimental film techniques, and darkroom printing to achieve spatial forms that become distorted because of light, dust, silver (and a touch of magic). Primarily working in long/multi exposure portraiture, including self-portraiture, his work explores the intersection between reality and dreams. He incorporates pictorialism and chiaroscuro sensibilities to create visual interest and expressive mood. He invites the viewer to examine the emotion of connection to form while reflecting inwardly.

Kamelia Pezeshki was born in Urmia, Iran in 1963. As a young girl she moved to the United States in 1979 with her family. Similar to other immigrants who keep moving in search of yet another home, she moved a few times before settling in Salt Lake City, Utah. There she received a Bachelor of Fine Arts at the University of Utah with emphasis in Photography. Her photographs are included in the Utah Museum of Fine Arts permanent collection. After artistic accomplishments in Utah, she made another life changing decision. This time she moved to Toronto, Canada in 1996 where she resides and continues to use film cameras and alternative processes to make photographs.BFA / Photography, University of Utah2020 | Rebel Lens | CONTACT photo festival | Lonsdale Gallery2019 | LIght/Weight | CONTACT photo festival | Arta Gallery2019 | Solo show, Scattered | Dylan Ellis Gallery2019 | Winter group show | Phillips Gallery2019 | Limitless | CONTACT photo festival | Queen Gallery2018 | 4 Women 4 Visions | Gallery 502018 | Red LIght | CONTACT photo festival | Lonsdale Gallery2017 | Group show | Gallery 502016 | Scattered, new works | Gallery 50, Toronto2016 | Ten | Group show | Gallery 5o2016 | Group show | Charlotte Hale Gallery2015 | CONTACT photo festival | freedom of expression | Art Square Gallery2015 | Ten | Gallery 50 | Toronto2014 | From Her Point of View | Articsok gallery | Torotno2014 | Group show | Art Square Gallery | Toronto2014 | Scattered | Phillips Gallery | Salt Lake City, Utah2013 | Off the wall fundraiser | Propeller Centre for the Visual Arts2013 | Ontario Distilled | Taylor Statten Camping Bursary Fund Art Show2013 | Hope Echoed: A Sentiment in Contemporary Iranian PortraitureTirgan Iranian FestivalHarbourfront Center, Marilyn Brewer Community Space, Toronto2013 | Portraits | CONTACT Photo festival | Arta Gallery, Toronto2013 | Wall | Group Show | Arta Gallery, Toronto2012 | Holiday Group Show | Phillips Gallery | Salt Lake City, Utah2012 | Speak Easy Fall Art Fair | The Gladstone Hotel | Toronto2012 | Ontario Distilled | Taylor Statten Camping Bursary Fund Art Show2011 | Group Show | Mellwood Art Center | Louisville, Kentucky2011 | Hang with the best | Toronto Image Works, Toronto2011 | 4x5 | Group Show | Cafe Pamenar, Toronto2011 | Group Show | Queen Gallery, Toronto2010 | Photo Junction | Group show | El Almacen cafe, Toronto2010 | CONTACT Photo Festival | Pervasive Influence | Queen Gallery2010 | Iranian Artists Group Show | Arta Gallery, Toronto2010 | Salon Show | Propeller Center for the Arts2009 | Group Show | Queen gallery2009 | Fly with the cage | Group Show | Lennox Contemporary, Toronto2009 | CONTACT Photo Festival | Arta Gallery2009 | Salon Show | Propeller Center for the Arts | Toronto2008 | Group show | Arta Gallery2006 | Group show | Arta Gallery2004 | CONTACT Photo Festival | Eastern Front Gallery, Toronto2003 | Music Garden | Solo show | To Go food bar, Toronto2003 | Senses | Group show | Elevator Photo Gallery, Toronto2002 | Memoir | Solo show | Elevator Photo Gallery2001 | Memoir | Solo show | Mervish Books, Toronto2001 | Family show | Elevator Photo Gallery2000 | Three photographers | To Go Food Bar1999 | Ecelective Collective | Indigo Books, Toronto1993 | Group show | Sego gallery | SLC, Utah1991 | Open photo show | Kimball Art Center | Park City, Utah1990 | Landscapes | Solo show | Woman's place bookstore | SLC, Utah1989 | Group show | Utah Museum of Fine Arts | SLC, Utah1988 | Black and White show | Eccles Fine Arts Center | Ogden, UtahLinkswww.phillips-gallery.comwww.bysahar.cahttps://www.artsy.net/sahar-k-boluki-gallerynowtoronto.com/art-and-books/contact-photography-fest-must-see-shows/https://www.cityweekly.net/utah/essentials-entertainment-picks-april-10-16/Content?oid=2374511In permenent collection of Utah Museum of Fine Arts
